Throughout history in Western civilization, sexual morality has been dictated and regulated by organized religions, the Church.

The ethical canons of Christianity and Judaism forbid many sex acts as unclean or contrary to God's law.

In the last several decades, however, the Church has been relaxing much of its opposition to sexual practices which are becoming commonplace.

Medical research has discounted many fears of the dangers of certain acts like masturbation and anal and oral intercourse as myths

and proclaimed that better mental and emotional health will result from an attitude that whatever brings pleasure in sex is right.
